For example:

ii. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.

The phrase “We refuse” are found twice by using the AntConc.

ii. Manner

In his speech, we can see that he used a lot of repetition on these phrases such as I have a dream, one hundred years and we refuse. Based on what our group has analysed, with the repetition of certain phrases, the speech itself has created its own effect or impact to those who hear. The repetition of the phrase emphasized or stressed on a certain value that Martin Lurther King Jr. wanted. The repetition of certain phrases is also quite catchy and will always stay in our minds for years to come.

iii. Meaning

In his speech, Martin Lurther King Jr.’s used repetition a lot of times. With the phrase “we refuse”, he showed his denial in believing that certain value such as justice is no longer available for the African-Americans. Justice is what the African-Americans want to claim from the white Americans.
